Up to 100% funding is available for tree planting projects in the Middle Maitland River watershed. Specifically we’re looking to work with landowners to create buffers along the river, drains and creeks. The Middle Maitland River Watershed includes areas around Listowel, Atwood, Monkton, Brussels, east of Milverton, and south of Wingham.
Buffers stabilize streambanks by holding soil in place and reducing soil erosion, help to filter runoff and trap sediment before it enters the stream, and reduce downstream flooding by slowing this runoff.
As they grow, buffers provide important habitat and travel corridors for wildlife and pollinators like birds and butterflies.
Landowners are encouraged to expand buffer widths where possible to increase impact. Species diversity of trees, shrubs, and flowering plants is also encouraged to increase resilience to climate change and invasive species.
Projects eligible for funding can range from large areas of floodplain plantings to a single row of trees along a municipal drain.
We’re working to coordinate and fund these projects, understanding that landowners often do not have the time or resources to undertake it themselves. This opportunity is made possible by contributions from multiple partners including the Huron Clean Water Project and the Maitland Conservation Foundation.
Funding is limited so let us know if you’re interested as soon as possible. Not sure if you’re in the Middle Maitland River watershed? Check out the mapping portal posted below:
