Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook for Port Albert
The arrival of an arctic front has brought frigid temperatures to the region. Cold temperatures combined with open water, has caused the formation of frazil ice in the mouth of the Nine Mile River. Water from the river may back up behind the frazil ice resulting in rising water levels in the area.
Frazil ice jams are unpredictable and it is difficult to estimate how long this situation may persist. Ice jamming has not been observed at this time, but could materialize rapidly. Cold temperatures are forecasted to leave the region by late Saturday morning, which should alleviate frazil ice formation (forecast subject to change).
The severity and duration of flooding may be greater than during past events because of the high level of Lake Huron. The high lake level has reduced the outflow at the mouth of the river. This is expected to inhibit the flow of flood waters to the lake.
Residents are reminded not to attempt to drive or walk through flooded areas, and that slippery and unstable streambanks and cold water temperatures will create hazardous conditions around all watercourses.
Maitland Conservation and the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh are continuing to closely monitoring the situation. This message is in effect until 10:00 am on Sunday Feb. 16, 2020.

Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook – Early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts calling for heavy rain, snow melt, high wind or other conditions that could lead to high runoff, cause ice jams, lakeshore flooding or erosion.
Flood Watch – Flooding is possible in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities, emergency services and individual landowners in flood-prone areas should prepare.
Flood Warning – Flooding is imminent or already occurring in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities and individuals should take action to deal with flood conditions. This may include road closures and evacuations.
