Wawanosh Park Conservation Area

Wawanosh Park Conservation Area park is located on Glens Hill Rd.,  11 km south of County Road # 86 (Amberley Rd.), just east of County Road # 22 (Donnybrook Line).

You’ll enjoy the quiet atmosphere of Wawanosh Park Conservation Area. The property is situated along the scenic Maitland River. There’s a large picnic shelter on the grounds that can be reserved. The property also features easy access to the river and walking trails. The park is terrific starting or ending point for a canoe trip down the Maitland River.

To the fishing enthusiast the Maitland River means catches of bass, chinook salmon, and rainbow trout. If you’d like to try some paddling, the Maitland River provides a variety of conditions ranging from calm waters for the novice to spring rapids that will test the skills of any canoeist. Wawanosh Park also offers the opportunity to put your feet up and enjoy the sights and sounds of birds and animals along the river.

Closure of Seasonal Camping Operations at Wawanosh Park

Maitland Conservation recently conducted an operations review of Wawanosh Park Conservation Area. This review was undertaken to determine if campground operations were following the Authority’s goals and objectives and to identify any safety concerns or liabilities.

The review identified several concerns, the most significant being the campground’s location within a floodplain.  With the increasing risk of intense, localized rain events, the likelihood of needing to evacuate campers and belongings before floodwaters enter the campground is a serious concern.

After discussion at the November 19, 2025 Membership meeting, a motion to close Wawanosh Park for camping was approved. While this was a difficult decision, the Authority must prioritize safe and compatible operations on the lands we manage.

The Authority will develop a plan to naturalize campsite locations starting in 2026, while continuing to manage the area as a community day-use facility.  This will maintain public access to the existing picnic shelter, river and natural areas for community enjoyment.

Comments on the closing of campground operation are welcome. Please submit your comments by January 2nd, 2026 to:
