Planning Your Planting
1. Do-It-Yourself Planting
Planting trees on your own? Below are some tips for a successful project!
- Determine the type of project you would like to complete
- Choose which species are suitable for your site and project
- Consider your site’s sunlight, soil type, and drainage of water.
- Determine which species will help meet your project goals.
- Our What to Plant document (also found at the end of the tree order form) can help you match species to your site
- Determine how many trees and/or shrubs will fit in your space
- It is important to consider the width your trees and shrubs will become as they age. Many on-line resources provide this information, as can Maitland Conservation staff.
- Contact Maitland Conservation to determine if your project is eligible for grant funding.
- Note: to be eligible, most projects must be restoration focused with at least 50 trees or shrubs per property. Landscaping is not often eligible.
- Place your tree and shrub order as soon as possible.
Our staff are happy to help with advice. See our stewardship contact information below.
2. Planting Coordination Services
Thinking of having a contractor plant your trees? In that case, don’t submit an order form just yet! Contractors typically source the trees they’ll be planting. Reach out to our stewardship staff to discuss this option.
For projects that qualify as restoration (e.g. windbreaks, buffers, reforestation), stewardship staff can work with you to develop a planting plan and coordinate a planting contractor. After discussing your project and its restoration value, staff will:
- Schedule a site visit to walk the site and discuss your goals
- Provide advice for your site, advice on site preparation, and create a planting plan
- Look into possible funding opportunities to help offset costs
- Coordinate with a contractor to provide quotes, site visits, and complete the planting
