Water Quality Programs

Maitland Conservation staff provide assistance to landowners undertaking projects to improve water quality. Grants are available in Huron and Wellington counties for selected best management practices. These programs are financially supported by local municipalities and delivered by Conservation Authority staff.

Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program
100% Funding Available for Restoration Projects

Maitland Conservation has received funding for restoration projects on agricultural land through the Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program – Marginal Lands initiative.

Eligible projects include watercourse buffers, wetland creation, windbreaks, tree planting on marginal agricultural land, and berms and grassed waterways.

To be eligible, farmers must have a Farm Business Registration Number (FBRN), and either have or be willing to obtain a 4th or 5th edition Environmental Farm Plan. Projects must take place on agricultural lands (i.e. not in an existing natural area).

Funding includes the costs of trees and shrubs, contractors, and project coordination.

Farmers interested in this opportunity are encouraged to schedule their site visit today!

Financial support has been provided under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative.

Huron Clean Water Project

For over 20 years the Huron Clean Water Project (HCWP) provided financial and technical assistance to county residents to improve and protect water quality. The project was funded by the County of Huron and delivered by the Maitland and Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authorities. Over 4,600 projects have been completed. The program is now winding down and Maitland Conservation would like to thank all the landowners who participated in the program over the years. Your commitment to stewardship has left a lasting legacy throughout the Maitland and Ausable Bayfield watersheds.

If you have questions about wrapping up a project on your property please contact Ben Van Dieten, Agricultural Stewardship Supervisor, at bvandieten@mvca.on.ca or 519-335-3557 ext. 245.

Wellington Rural Water Quality Program

The Wellington Rural Water Quality Program was initiated in 1999.  The County of Wellington provides funding to this program annually.

In the portions of the Maitland watershed that are within Wellington County, Maitland Conservation staff are responsible for program delivery.

Landowners in Wellington County who have completed an Environmental Farm Plan are eligible to apply to the program. Check out the WRWQP flyer for information on projects and grant rates. If you’d like to discuss a potential project contact Ben Van Dieten, Agricultural Stewardship Supervisor, at bvandieten@mvca.on.ca or 519-335-3557 ext. 245.
