Flood Watch Update – Ice Jams Impacting Lower Maitland and Nine Mile Rivers
The flood watch issued on January 25, 2026 for the Township of Ashfield-Colborne Wawanosh remains in effect. A polar vortex has brought persistent frigid air to the area. The combination of streamflow from the previous brief thaw and cold air temperatures may cause frazil ice formation which will heighten the risk of ice jamming and localized flooding issues in typical areas prone to this issue.
Stream gauge stations in the area of Benmiller and Sharpes Creek Line are indicating a rapid rise in water level likely due to obstruction from ice formation. Residents are reminded not to attempt to drive or walk through flooded areas. Conditions can change rapidly, and access routes can quickly be cut-off.
It is difficult to predict where ice jams will form and how long they will persist. Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh staff should monitor crossing structures for ice jams and localized flooding.
Maitland Conservation staff will continue to closely monitor conditions in the Port Albert and Benmiller areas over the next week and will provide an update if conditions change.
This message will remain in place until 4:00 p.m. on Friday January 30, 2026.

Flood Warning – Flooding is imminent or already occurring in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities and individuals should take action to deal with flood conditions. This may include road closures and evacuations.
