Flood Watch Update: Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh

Flood Watch Update: Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh

January 30, 2026

Flood Watch Update – Ice Jam Potential Continues in Lower Maitland and Nine Mile Rivers

The flood watch issued by Maitland Conservation on January 25, 2026, for the Township of Ashfield-Colborne Wawanosh has been extended until February 2, 2026. Persistent cold temperatures may cause the formation of frazil ice in open watercourses as water temperatures fall below zero. Although many local watercourses have frozen over, remaining open water may still be subject to frazil ice formation. This could heighten the risk of ice jamming and localized flooding problems in areas prone to this issue.

It is difficult to predict where ice jams will form and how long they will persist. Residents are reminded not to attempt to drive or walk through flooded areas. Conditions can change rapidly, and access routes can quickly be cut-off.

Maitland Conservation staff will closely monitor conditions in Port Albert, Benmiller and Sharpes Creek Line and will provide an update if conditions change.

This message will remain in place until 4:00 p.m. on Monday February 2, 2026.
