In June 2017 floodwaters caused extensive damage at Gorrie Conservation Area. As a result, the recreational dam at the site was removed in 2021. Since then the picnic shelter has been repaired, a new sign kiosk installed and tree, shrub and wildflower planting has been underway. Information about the process of removing of the dam is posted below.
Naturalization efforts at the property are continuing this fall. This work is in accordance with the Conservation Areas Strategy approved by the Members of Maitland Conservation in December 2024.
- increase biodiversity
- provide habitat and food for pollinators, birds, turtles and many species at risk
- reduce carbon emissions and costs from grass cutting
A naturalization planting plan has been developed. Click the link below to view the plan.
Gorrie Conservation Area – Naturalization Plan
This plan also incorporates areas where the grass will continue to be trimmed to ensure easy public access to the river, trails, and picnic shelter. Several small open areas are also included in the plan.
