Maitland Conservation is replacing the watershed-wide Flood Watch with a Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety for all municipalities in the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds.

River levels throughout both watersheds have peaked and are steadily dropping below flood stage.  Weather forecasts indicate temperatures will remain predominantly below freezing over the coming week, which will slow runoff and allow river levels to continue receding over the next several days.

Although river levels are below flood stage, many watercourses remain elevated above bankfull and floodwaters are still present within floodplain areas. Even as levels recede, several risks remain. Municipal officials are advised to continue monitoring infrastructure for debris jams or blockages at bridges and culverts until flows decline further. Damaged culverts and accumulating debris still have the potential to cause blockages and localized flooding.

Rural gravel roads may also be structurally weakened due to saturation and recent washouts.

Hazardous conditions persist around all river and floodplain areas. Residents are reminded to keep children and pets away from all watercourses. Elevated water levels and fast-moving flows may persist through the beginning of next week.

Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety – General watershed conditions are being assessed for high runoff potential that could lead to flooding, and to remind the public of general river safety issues.

Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook – Early notice of the potential for flooding based on weather forecasts calling for heavy rain, snow melt, high wind or other conditions that could lead to high runoff, cause ice jams, lakeshore flooding or erosion

Flood Watch – Flooding is possible in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities, emergency services and individual landowners in flood-prone areas should prepare.

Flood Warning – Flooding is imminent or already occurring in specific watercourses or municipalities. Municipalities and individuals should take action to deal with flood conditions. This may include road closures and evacuations.
