Flood Warning Continued for Parts of Maitland Watershed

Flood Warning Continued for Parts of Maitland Watershed

February 22, 2018

Flood Warning Continued for Parts of the Maitland River Watershed
Warning Reduced to Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety for some sections of the Maitland River watershed and for the entire Nine Mile River watershed

River levels have begun to recede in some sections of the Maitland River and in the entire Nine Mile River watershed. The Flood Warning issued by Maitland Conservation on Tuesday February 20th, has been reduced to a Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety for:

  • the upper Middle Maitland River in the Listowel area
  • the North Maitland River through Harriston, Fordwich, Gorrie and Wroxeter
  • the South Maitland River through Seaforth
  • and the Nine Mile River watershed

This Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety will remain in effect until 10:00 am on Tuesday Feb. 27, 2018. Although the Flood Warning has been lifted for these areas, it is important to note that flows remain fast and water temperatures are extremely cold. We remind residents that unstable streambanks and cold water temperatures will create hazardous conditions around all watercourses.

The Flood Warning remains in place for the following areas:

  • the Middle Maitland River from the Boyle Drain, through Ethel and Brussels
  • the Lower Maitland River from Wingham downstream to the mouth of the river in Goderich.

River levels in these areas have been slow to recede and it is expected that levels and flows  will remain high for at least the next 24 hours. This Flood Warning will remain in place until 3:00 p.m. on Friday February 23, 2018 at which point it will be reduced to a Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety, unless conditions warrant an extension of the Flood Warning.

Maitland Conservation staff are continuing to monitor conditions throughout the Maitland and Nine Mile river watersheds. There are currently no ice jams reported in either river system.
