Building Removals at Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area

Building Removals at Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area

September 26, 2023

There are big changes coming to Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area. The structures on the site, including the Wawanosh Nature Centre, will be removed starting October 2, 2023. It is expected to take several months to complete the work and undertake site restoration.

In June 2023 Maitland Conservation Members approved the removal by C & R Barn Removal and Salvage. This decision was based on the structural condition of the buildings and a review of the Authority’s programs and services.

A new picnic shelter with hydro, water and accessible washrooms and picnic tables is planned for the site.

We are working to ensure that some of the history of the site is maintained going forward. This includes:

  • Keeping the silo in place,
  • Retaining foundation stones for reuse in the new picnic shelter structure,
  • Reusing several large beams from the Nature Centre barn in the picnic shelter.

Public Use During the Removal Process

  • While the removal work is ongoing the trails will remain open with the exception of the red trail.
  • The washroom privy will be closed.
  • Some areas will be fenced off and signed. Please follow all instructions on the signs and stay out of the fenced areas.

Building for the Future

As mentioned above, a new picnic shelter with accessible washrooms and picnic tables is being planned for the site. This facility will create a safe, accessible space for community events.

Fundraising is underway for this initiative. If you’re able to help out please visit: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/maitland-valley-conservation-authority/
