On July 12, 2022, the Ontario Court of Justice found Laurie Joan Macpherson guilty of developing and interfering with a wetland. The charges were laid in the summer of 2017 when works were undertaken that led to the destruction of the wetland located at 38926 Moncrieff Rd., Township of North Huron.
The wetland is part of the Westfield Wetland Complex and is designated as Provincially Significant. In handing down his decision, Justice of the Peace Peter Aharan commented that he found the testimony and evidence given by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority to be done fairly and without prejudice.
A sentencing hearing will be held in the fall of 2022 to determine the penalty which could include a restoration order and fines of up to $7,000 per count.
Maitland Conservation reminds landowners that development activities within a regulated area require permission from the Conservation Authority. Both property owners and contractors considering work in a regulated area should contact Maitland Conservation to determine if a permit is required. “Getting information before starting work ensures infractions like this don’t occur,” commented Patrick Huber-Kidby, Planning and Regulations Supervisor.
