Watershed Conditions Statement – Flood Outlook
A Colorado Low is forecast to move through the Great Lakes region bringing heavy rainfall to southwestern Ontario. At this time precipitation forecasts for the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds are variable but 50-70mm of rain is expected beginning Wednesday afternoon and continuing through Thursday morning.
Water levels in streams and rivers throughout the watersheds remain slightly elevated due to recent rainfall. With near-saturated ground conditions, the anticipated heavy rain will generate strong runoff and a rapid rise in river levels. If forecasted rain amounts materialize, water levels are expected to reach heights similar to those seen during the March 16-17th high flow event, where water levels exceeded bankfull and caused minor flooding. Only a marginal increase in rainfall beyond what is forecasted could push river levels to a more significant flood stage.
Municipal officials are encouraged to prepare, check drainage systems and monitor low-lying and flood-prone roads. Residents are reminded to stay clear of fast-moving, cold water and unstable streambanks, as conditions will be hazardous.
Maitland Conservation is closely monitoring watershed conditions and will update with flood statements as needed.
This message is in effect until the afternoon of Thursday April 3rd, 2025.
