Wingham Floodplain Mapping Update – Howson Dam Removal
Maitland Conservation is updating floodplain mapping in Wingham to reflect changes following the removal of the Howson Dam in 2024. The dam significantly influenced flood patterns, particularly north of B Line Road. Its removal has altered upstream conditions, making parts of the 2019 mapping no longer accurate.
This project is being delivered through a collaborative effort between the Maitland Conservation, GeoProcess Research Associates Ltd., the Municipality of North Huron, and the Municipality of Morris-Turnberry. It is funded in part by the Federal Government’s Flood Hazard Identification and Mapping Program (FHIMP), which is administered in Ontario through a 50-50 cost-share partnership.
GeoProcess Research Associates Ltd., the original consultant for the 2019 mapping, has been retained to complete the necessary updates. This targeted project is limited in scope and is scheduled for completion by Fall 2025.
A Public Information Centre (PIC) will be held upon completion of the mapping to provide residents with an opportunity to review and comment on the results.
Lucknow Floodplain Mapping Update
A major update to floodplain mapping for the Town of Lucknow is also underway. This project will replace outdated mapping last completed in 1979. The new mapping will extend beyond the developed town limits to include rural reaches of Kinloss and Dickie’s Creek, up to Kairshea Avenue.
This project is a collaborative effort involving the Municipality of Huron-Kinloss and is funded in part by the Federal Government’s Flood Hazard Identification and Mapping Program (FHIMP), with support from the Province of Ontario through a 50-50 cost-share agreement.
Following a public Request for Proposals, Tatham Engineering Ltd. was selected to carry out the work. The mapping is expected to be completed by September 2026.
A Public Information Centre (PIC) will be held once the mapping is completed to provide the public with an opportunity to review the results and offer feedback.
