Tree harvesting is underway at Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area for the next several weeks. This will include removing diseased and damaged trees as well as thinning plantation areas. This work will help keep the property safe for visitors and the woodlots healthy. Doing the harvesting in the winter reduces damage to trails and helps to protect the forest floor. The contractors are extremely skilled and are able to carefully bring down trees in a way that protects other trees nearby.
While the harvesting work is going on, the east side of the property where the Nature Centre building is located, will be closed to the public due to safety concerns. We’re not yet able to provide an exact date of when the property will reopen. The contractors will be using a selective harvesting method which is time consuming. In addition, progress will be dependent on weather conditions.
Once the harvesting work is completed it will take some time for Maitland Conservation staff to clear debris off the trails.
We will provide updates as the project progresses and provide an estimated reopening date.
We understand that this closure will be significant inconvenience for visitors and we apologize for the disruption in access.
