A Watershed Conditions Statement – Water Safety has been issued by Maitland Conservation for all municipalities in the Maitland and Nine Mile River watersheds.
A series of low-pressure systems along with mild temperatures will bring widespread rainfall to the Maitland and Nine Mile watersheds. Steady, light rain began this morning (Saturday, December 28th, 2024) and will continue into tomorrow resulting in 20 to 30 mm of rainfall. The combination of above-seasonal temperatures and rain will result in a significant melt of the snowpack. The combination of runoff generated from the snowmelt and rain will lead to saturated ground conditions and elevated water levels in rivers and streams throughout the watersheds.
While significant flooding is not expected at this time, levels in streams and rivers may reach or exceed bankfull conditions resulting in some minor flooding in low-lying areas. These conditions will likely persist over the next several days as above-freezing temperatures and forecasted rain continues into early next week. These will be the largest flows of the year, and being in the midst of the holiday season special attention should be given to water safety during gatherings and outdoor recreational activities. We remind people that slippery and unstable streambanks and cold water temperatures will create hazardous conditions around all watercourses.
Municipal officials are encouraged to check drainage systems and monitor low-lying and flood prone roads.
Maitland Conservation is monitoring watershed conditions and will provide an update if warranted.
This message is in effect until the afternoon of Thursday January 2nd, 2025.
